What Can We Learn From Google When Creating Data Visualizations
Google's search engine follows a principle that can be particularly useful in data visualization. What is that principle? While most websites worldwide aim for users to spend as much time as possible on their platforms, Google strives for users to spend as little time in the search engine as possible. Why? Because if a user spends a lot of time, it means they cannot find the information they need. If they spend a short time, it means they quickly find the information they are interested in. This exact principle should guide us when designing any data visualizations. It is the paramount principle, more important than any advice on using specific colors or choosing certain types of charts. Always, always, always strive to make sure your audience captures key information from your visualizations as quickly as possible. I will illustrate my presentation with numerous case studies, showcasing some very poor visualizations and gradually, step by step, demonstrating their improved versions until finally presenting a flawless version. I plan to present at least 5 such case studies.
